Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands with an area of 1,400 square kilometres and is situated in the south-eastern corner of the sparkling Aegean Sea. The meaning of Dodecanese is 12 islands but in fact there are nearly 200 in the Dodecanese Island area although many are uninhabited. Rhodes has a thriving economy based mainly on tourism and has excellent transport links with other smaller Dodecanese Islands including Symi, Karpathos, Kassos, Halki, Kos, Kalimnos, Leros and Patmos. Some of the places to visit

Lindos

The Acropolis, take a donkey ride up and walk down, suggest that you go in the morning as it closes around 1530hrs. Traditional village with pebble streets with lots of small shops, restaurants and bars.

The valley of the butterflies

Turn left off the main road at Kolimbia. Its all sign posted. This is one of the most unusual biotopes in Europe, it is a luxuriant ravine with abundant running water that attracts thousands of butterflies. Best visiting time June/July and beginning of August.

Surrounding areas

Dazzling Lindos white houses climbing the slopes of a fortress topped hill at the end of a sweeping bay make Lindos a spell-binding destination, fully pedestrianised with only donkeys as transport for day trippers along its stone pebbled alleyways.

There are many fantastic and well priced restaurants in the surrounding area, a lot of different varieties to choose from some are located in Kalathos itself, Charaki (10 mins by car) Pefkos, Lardos and many in Lindos all very good food and reasonably priced.

There are also alot of sandy beaches near by buch as St Pauls Bay (pictured below) - a small sandy bay with a beautiful white chapel located just past Lindos. Golden Sands - is a sandy beach with long shallow water (you can walk out miles!) it is located near Charki and is well sign posted. Glystra Beach - this is also a sandy beach with shollow water it also has a cafe and toilet.

  • Transfer from Rhodes airport 45 mins by car or taxi.
  • Lindos 5 mins by car
  • Lardos and Pefkos 10 mins by car.
  • Kalathos Beach 20 mins walking.
  • Sandy Beaches - 4 within 10 mins by car.

Lindos Bay

St Pauls Bay

Lindos, drive past Lindos, turn left after 2nd carpark for Lindos after the sharp right hand bend, small bay with church but no facilities.

Glystra Beach

Drive towards Lindos and turn right towards Lardos after the supermarket, stay on this road for about ten minutes until you pass a new harbour on the left, Glystra is the turning after the bus stop on the left. This is a sandy beach with shallow water, also a café and toilets.

Golden Sands

Drive towards Rhodes and turn right towards Haraki which is just past what looks like old greenhouses on the right, turn left onto stone track which is sign posted and follow the track, this is a sandy beach with long shallow water ( you can walk out miles! ). There is a café and WC.
